What the extension does
Ratings for Netflix is a browser extension for netflix.com. It shows the IMDb rating, the Rotten Tomatoes critics score (Tomatometer) and audience score (Popcornmeter), and the Metascore for the titles you browse. Scores appear on title cards, under the featured title at the top of the home page, and in the title details window, with links to the title's page on IMDb or Rotten Tomatoes.
You do not need an account, and the extension keeps nothing about you on any server. Everything it does with what you see on Netflix happens in your browser.
What data it handles
To find the ratings for a title, the extension works with information about the title, not about you:
- The Netflix title id of each card on the page you are viewing, read from the page.
- The title's type and year (film or series, and the first season's year for series), which the extension asks netflix.com for, using your existing Netflix session. This is the same kind of request the Netflix site makes itself.
- The title's English name, read from netflix.com's public title page. This request is made without your cookies.
- The ratings for that title, taken from the public rating lists described below or returned by IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes.
The extension does not read your viewing history, your profile, your account details or anything you type.
What it stores and where
- Ratings cache, in your browser's local extension storage (
chrome.storage.local). For each title it keeps the Netflix title id, the title name, type and year, and the ratings found. Found ratings are kept for 3 days and titles with no match for 12 hours, then looked up again. The Refresh button in the extension's popup deletes this cache. - Your settings, in
chrome.storage.sync: the show/hide switch and which scores to show. If you have Chrome sync turned on, Chrome copies these settings to your other signed-in browsers. - Rating lists, in the extension's own cache storage: the latest copy of the two public rating lists downloaded from this website, and the date of that copy.
Removing the extension deletes all of them.
What it sends and to whom
- Netflix (
www.netflix.com): the title id, to get the title's type, year and English name. - IMDb (
v3.sg.media-imdb.comandcaching.graphql.imdb.com): the title name, to find the title, and then IMDb's own id for the matched title, to get its rating, number of votes and Metascore. - Rotten Tomatoes (
www.rottentomatoes.com): the title name, to search for the title, and then a request for the matched title's page, to read its scores. - This website (
ratings-for-netflix.vercel.app): every few hours the extension downloads a small version file, and when it has changed, two public rating lists that match Netflix titles to their IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes scores. These files are the same for everyone, and the requests carry nothing about you or what you watch.
The extension adds no cookies, account details or identifiers of its own to these requests. Like any web request, they reveal your IP address and browser type to the site that receives them. Each of these sites handles that under its own privacy policy.
Nothing about you is sent to us. The only requests the extension makes to this website are the rating list downloads above. The website sets no cookies and runs no analytics. It is hosted on Vercel, which handles those requests under its own privacy policy.
What it never does
- It does not collect, sell or share any personal data.
- It does not track your browsing history or the pages you visit outside netflix.com.
- It does not use analytics, advertising or tracking of any kind.
- It does not load code from the internet. All of its code ships inside the extension.
